The Welcome Wagon: Keepers of the Faith Thrive in the Hipster's Den

2 December 2008 5:00 AM, PST

Who are Vito and Monique Aiuto? Simple church folk suddenly clamoring for hipster cred? A Sufjan Stevens project masquerading under a new moniker? Are they simple-minded reactionaries? Or simply a Presbyterian minister and his wife, taking a break from tending their flock to play some heartfelt religious tunes?

Manhattan might have St. Patrick’s, Trinity and St. John the Divine, yet it’s Brooklyn that’s called “the borough of churches.” Climbing up from the G Train at Greenpoint Avenue, you’d have to be blind to miss the block’s focal point—St. Anthony of Padua, a Roman Catholic church that visually anchors this largely Polish but rapidly changing neighborhood with its red brick, white limestone, gothic arches and 240-foot spire.

10 Best Songs To Listen To While The Gators Spank Alabama in the 2008 SEC Championship

2 December 2008 4:00 AM, PST

10. Sufjan Stevens - “Decatur”

True, the song’s shuffling tempo and plunking banjo don’t exactly scream “get psyched!” but it’s hard to find many songs that make glancing mention of a “wild alligator.” Yes, I realize that in context the lyric mentions that someone “caught” the aforementioned wild alligator, however Stevens neglects to finish that plot thread, which ends with the gator escaping captivity and brutally mauling 28 Alabama fans.

Life, Camera, Action: Movie Hopping While Rome burns

1 December 2008 1:00 PM, PST

David Lynch once called film “a magical medium that allows you to dream in the dark.” Walking the carpeted hallways and miniature lobbies of a Times Square megaplex, then, is like stealing between people's private visions. I've paid $12.50 for admission into a movie theater with lax security, giving me freedom to roam the various screenings, and the movies I see constitute a Lynchian avant-garde composite. I glance at the audience’s faces before I sit. It’s comforting to see people laugh at the same time at the same punchline; comforting that an emotional majority can still be measured inside a multiplex.

Craig Fuller

1 December 2008 11:01 AM, PST

It is fitting that you can't find an Internet photo of Craig Fuller from his glory days with Pure Prairie League. Back in the day (and we're talking the early '70s here) he had hair down to the middle of his back, and he was writing songs that pretty much defined what came to be known as Country Rock (yes, before there was alt-country, y'allternative, and Americana, there was just Country Rock). For what it's worth, it's hard to find his old music these days, too. And now he looks like the guy who sold you life insurance last month. It's okay. Some of us remember.

Oscar Buzz: Who's ahead in this year's key races?

1 December 2008 10:00 AM, PST

There's a surprisingly gargantuan Internet faction dedicated to predicting who will be up for film's most coveted prize, the Academy Award. Publications like Variety, The Hollywood Reporter, Entertainment Weekly, Los Angeles Times and New York Times all have Oscar blogs that obsessively trail the fluctuations in buzz amongst the year's top films. That's not to mention stand-alone sites like Awards Daily and In Contention, or well-known bloggers like Jeff Wells, Dave Poland and Anne Thompson. Even Roger Ebert has devoted a wealth of recent ink on the subject. But, the truth is, no matter how much someone knows, it's still just a wild guessing game.

Calexico - 11/15/08 - Tarrytown, NY

1 December 2008 8:00 AM, PST

A beautiful day on Main Street. Kids pour out of the Music Hall from a matinee production of Grease. The sun is shining, parents are with kids, there's lots of little shops and cafes up and down the block; but still in the back of my mind I know the ghost of the headless horseman is gearing up for a ride through nearby Sleepy Hollow tonight. He was a Hessian solider after all...I wonder if Martin and Volker know the story?

Band of the Week: honeyhoney

1 December 2008 5:00 AM, PST

Band Of The Week: honeyhoney Hometown: Los Angeles, Calif.

Fun Fact: Before launching a songwriting partnership with Suzanne Santo, guitarist Ben Jaffe composed music for Nickelodeon and various cartoon shows. Meanwhile, Santo paid the bills as an actress, landing supporting roles in Law & Order, Blind Justice and the Sigourney Weaver film Imaginary Heroes.

Why It's Worth Watching: Alternately rustic-retro and cool-contemporary, honeyhoney’s First Rodeo displays the common pop thread between alt.country, spaghetti western soundtracks and swampy blues.

For Fans Of: She & Him, Nancy Sinatra & Lee Hazlewood, Jessie Baylin

Three days after the release of honeyhoney’s debut, bandmates Suzanne Santo and Ben Jaffe are on opposite coasts. Santo is spending the weekend in Atlanta, where her boyfriend has landed a job on the set of Road Trip 2. Meanwhile, Jaffe putters around the kitchen in Los Angeles, having chosen to stay home and enjoy the lingering warm weather. As
